Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Vulgar Latin *strinctus, from Latin strictus. Compare Aromanian strimtu. A similar nasal infix occurred in old Italian and Neapolitan strinto, Friulian strent, Venetan strento, Logudorese Sardinian istrintu, French étreint. Doublet of strict, ultimately borrowed from the same source.
