[edit]From Middle High German stimmen, from Old High German *stimmen (attested in Old High German gistimmen), derived from the noun stimma, stimna, from Proto-Germanic *stebnō or *stamnijō, from Proto-Indo-European *stomen- (“mouth, muzzle”).
