[edit]From Middle Irish stiúir, borrowed either from Old English stēoran, stīeran (“to steer; guide a vessel”) or Old Norse stýra; both of which are derived from Proto-Germanic *stiurijaną (“to steer”). See also English steer, Dutch sturen, German steuern.
