Etymology

[edit]

From a verb meaning "to move things around," from or cognate Middle Low German stûken (to push, bump, compress), from Old Saxon *stūkan, from Proto-Germanic *stūkaną (to be stiff, push), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)tewg- (to pound, push, beat).

By surface analysis, stök +‎ -a. Possibly related to English stook, stoke. Compare origin of stock, stuka.
