[edit]Syncope of Old Albanian sonëte, from Proto-Albanian *tˢjānaktāi, from Pre-Albanian (post-Proto-Indo-European) *ḱyeh₂ nékʷtey, dative-locative compound, literally ‘this night’. Cognate to Lithuanian šiąnakt and Latvian šonakt (“today”). Same type of construction as sot, sivjet. More at natë.
