Etymology

From Old Norse *sulka, *sylka, from Proto-Germanic *sulukōną, *sulikōną. Cognate with dialectal Danish sulke, solke, sylke, sølke (to sully), Norwegian Nynorsk sulka (to sully), German sulchen, sülchen (to sully, wallow around in mud or filth).
