Borrowed from French sofa, ultimately from either Arabic صُفَّة (ṣuffa, long seat of stone or brick) or Classical Syriac ܨܦܬܐ. Compare Russian софа (sofa), Italian sofà, Chinese 沙發 / 沙发 (shāfā), Polish sofa, Spanish sofá, German Sofa, Yiddish סאָפֿע (sofe).
