Etymology

Perhaps from an earlier form *sōd-, from Proto-Indo-European *sed- (to sit), whence eistedd (to sit); compare English soot. Alternatively, the earlier form is *stā-dh-, from Proto-Indo-European *steh₂- (to stand), whence sefyll (to stand, stop).
