Appearance
Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle Dutch slager. Equivalent to slaan + -er.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]slager m (plural slagers, diminutive slagertje n)
- butcher (one who prepares and sells meat and meat products)
- Je wilt niet dat de slager zijn eigen vlees keurt.
- You don't want a butcher to assess his own meat. (i.e., judgment of one's own work is unreliable due to bias)

Usage notes
[edit]In former times a slager would have also slaughtered animals, but in current language slachter is used for that occupation, except for meat vendors who also operate their own slaughterhouses.
