[edit]Attested since 1611. Probably a loan from Middle Low German. Possible cognates include Dutch slodder (“sloppy person”), slordig, sloddervos, Old Norse slyðra (“shred”), German schlottern (“tremble”), Gothic 𐌰𐍆𐍃𐌻𐌰𐌿𐌸𐌾𐌰𐌽 (afslauþjan, “be in doubt”). See also sluddra, slusk, slösa.
