[edit]From Old Danish slæbæ, sleffue, borrowed from Middle Low German slēpen, from Old Saxon *slēpian, from Proto-West Germanic *slaipijan, cognate with German schleifen (“to drag, slight”) (hence Danish sløjfe (“to demolish”)).
