Etymology

From Old Norse skjaðak n, from Old Irish sceïd, from Proto-Celtic *skeyeti (“to vomit”).

Contaminated by skjera and aks. Cognate with Icelandic skjaðak and Swedish skäde.

Alternatively, from skjera +‎ aks "a cutting grain ear", not related to the dialectal skjerak (with the same meaning, but from Old Norse skjaðak).
