[edit]Borrwoed from Middle Low German schelen, from Proto-Germanic *skilhijaną (“to squint”), cf. also German schielen. Derived from the adjective Proto-Germanic *skelhaz, *skelgaz (“wry, oblique”), cf. Old Norse skjalgr (“squinty”), German scheel (“squinty”).
