[edit]From Middle High German schilhen, from Old High German scilihen, from Proto-Germanic *skilhijaną, *skilhwijaną (“to squint”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kel- (“to bend; crook”). Related to Dutch scheel (“squinty; squint-eyed”), Old English sceolh (“slanted; oblique; wry”). More at skelly (“to squint”).
