Etymology

[edit]

A word coined from skābe (acid) +‎ -eklis by K. Valdemārs in the mid-19th century, originally with the meaning “oxide,” but later (in the 1860s) already with the present meaning of “oxygen.” (Valdemārs' initial term for “oxygen” was skābējs gaiss, later simply skābējs, but these terms were not accepted).[1]
