sköld (shield) +‎ padda (toad), from Old Swedish skioldpadda, a calque of Low German schildepadde, schiltpadde; compare with Norwegian Nynorsk skjelpadde, Danish skildpadde, Norwegian Bokmål skilpadde and Dutch schildpad. Compare German Schildkröte.
