[edit]sköld (“shield”) + padda (“toad”), from Old Swedish skioldpadda, a calque of Low German schildepadde, schiltpadde; compare with Norwegian Nynorsk skjelpadde, Danish skildpadde, Norwegian Bokmål skilpadde and Dutch schildpad. Compare German Schildkröte.
