From Old Danish skiemt, from the verb skiemte, skæmpte, thus modern Danish skæmte, the word is essentially derived from an Old Danish adjective, skam, meaning short. See Icelandic skammur. Cognate with Swedish skämt, Norwegian Bokmål skjemt, Norwegian Nynorsk skjemt, Faroese skemt, and Icelandic skemmtun.
