Via other European languages, ultimately borrowed from Latin synōnymum, from Ancient Greek συνώνυμον (sunṓnumon), neuter singular form of συνώνυμος (sunṓnumos, synonymous), from σύν (sún, with) and ὄνομα (ónoma, name).
