Borrowed from Dutch syllabe, from French syllabe, from Old French sillebe, from Latin syllaba, from Ancient Greek συλλαβή (sullabḗ), from συλλαμβάνω (sullambánō, I gather together), from συν- (sun-, together) + λαμβάνω (lambánō, I take).
