[edit]Early 19th century. Compound of sidderen (“to tremble”) + aal (“eel”), after siddervisch (“electric ray, torpedo”, 18th c., now distinguished as sidderrog). Both terms may be calques from German Zitterfisch (16th c.), Zitteraal (18th c.).
