Usage notes

[edit]

Although einkaufen and shoppen both mean to shop, there is a difference in connotation between them: einkaufen tends to be used in reference to shopping for necessities such as food, while shoppen tends to be used for “recreational” shopping, such as for clothes or shoes. Indeed, shoppen does not necessarily entail actually purchasing anything, as it can include window-shopping.
