senior captain (plural senior captains)

  1. (military) a military rank for a field officer above that of captain and below that of major
  2. (military) a military rank for a naval officer above that of captain and below the admiral ranks or flag ranks

Army

This rank may be equivalent to a captain, and given an O3 grade according to the NATO scale, though outranking any captain not a senior captain.

This rank may be equivalent to a major, and given an O4 grade according to the NATO scale, though subordinate to any major.

There is a German naval equivalent of this rank: Stabskapitänleutnant

Navy

This rank may be equivalent to a captain, and given an O6 grade according to the NATO scale, though outranking any captain not a senior captain.

This rank may be equivalent to a commodore, and given an O7 grade according to the NATO scale, though subordinate admiral.
