Usage notes
[edit]- Like the English word secretary, secretario can mean either a low-level clerical job or an executive position in a government. Due to traditional gender roles, secretaria has been largely associated with the former occupation and secretario with the latter. As a result, sometimes a female head of a government department will be referred to as la secretario.
