• Originally, is eadh answers the question an eadh just as 's e answers the question an e, and in this context simply means "yes". The corresponding answer "no" is chan eadh.
• However, it has since become lexicalized and is often perceived as a single word with a more general affirmative meaning. Nevertheless, it is not an all-purpose word for "yes", which in most cases must be expressed by repetition of the verb in the question being answered.
