[edit]From Middle High German schrīten, from Old High German skrītan, from Proto-West Germanic *skrīþan (“to step; stride”). Cognate with English shrithe (“to go about; roam; creep”), Icelandic skríða (“to creep; crawl”). More at shrithe.
