[edit]From Low German, from Schipper (“captain, one in charge of a boat”), from Middle Low German schipper, alteration of schēper, from Proto-Germanic *skipārijaz, whence also German Schiffer. Compare Dutch schipperen (“to manoeuvre, sort out, cope”).
