[edit]Nasalised form of schiagln, from Middle High German schilhen, from Old High German skilhen, skilahen, skilihen, from Proto-West Germanic *skilhijan (“to squint, be cross-eyed”), from Proto-Germanic *skelh (“slanted, crooked; squinted”), from Proto-Germanic *skelhaz (“squint-eyed, sloped, awry”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kel- (“bent, crooked”). Cognate with German schielen and scheel, Dutch scheel, Old English *sċīelan and sċeolh.
