[edit]From Old High German skaban, from Proto-Germanic *skabaną, from Proto-Indo-European *skabʰ- (“to scratch”). Compare Dutch schaven, English shave, Danish skave, Swedish skava, Icelandic skafa, Gothic 𐍃𐌺𐌰𐌱𐌰𐌽 (skaban).
