Etymology

scarna +‎ fol. First element from Proto-Germanic *skarną (filth, dung), second from Proto-Germanic *fullą (cup, beaker), literally ‘cup of shit’. Attested in a 1003 AD charter as an apparent proof of vestigial knowledge of Lombardic long after the people had assimilated to Italo-Roman society.
