[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *pl̥-nó-, from *pel(w)- (“a kind of vessel”). Cognate with Ancient Greek πέλλα (pélla, “milk pail, drinking bowl, goblet”), πελλίς (pellís), πελίς (pelís, “basin”), Old Church Slavonic поль (polĭ, “scoop”).[1]
