A variant form of scaitheadh (cutting, lopping off), from Middle Irish scothad, verbal noun of scothaid (to cut, lop off), from Middle Irish scoth (point, edge), from Proto-Celtic *skutā, from Proto-Indo-European *skewt- (to cut) (compare Lithuanian skùsti (to shave)).
