[edit]Borrowed from Malay catur (“chess”), from Sanskrit चतुरङ्ग (caturaṅga, “a kind of chess”, literally “four-limbed (army)”). Compare Maguindanao satul, Maranao sator, and Tausug sattul. Doublet of ahedres.
