[edit]Etymology
[edit]sata (“hundred”) + kieli (“tongue”)
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]satakieli
- Any of the birds in genus Luscinia, in Finnish satakielet. Individual species are called robin, rubythroat, nightingale and bluethroat in English.
- The thrush nightingale (sprosser), Luscinia luscinia.
- A commonly, and erroneously, used name of etelänsatakieli, the common nightingale, nightingale or rufous nightingale, Luscinia megarhynchos.
Usage notes
[edit]"Nightingale" is often translated into Finnish as satakieli. This is technically an error, since the bird called nightingale in English is a southern species and does not normally appear in Finland. The bird called satakieli in Finland is thrush nightingale in English.
