Etymology

From Vulgar Latin *singlutiāre, from singultiāre, from Latin singultāre, from singultus. The (Vulgar) Latin was altered under the influence of gluttiō, gluttīre (to swallow). Compare Italian singhiozzare, Romansch sanglotter, French sangloter.
