Inherited from Old French sengler, from Vulgar Latin *singlāris, inherited from Latin singulāris (porcus) (literally solitary pig), with later substitution of the suffix -ier for -er. Compare Occitan singlar, Catalan senglar, Italian cinghiale, Friulian cenglâr. Doublet of singulier.
