[edit]Borrowed from Russian самого́н (samogón). The synonym samãnė may be influenced by sãmanos (“moss”), as it may be brewed secretly in the woods.

[edit]The VLKK proscribes the Russian borrowing samagonas in favor of naminė, but condones samanė in informal usage.
