Etymology

[edit]

Seemingly formed as sam- + a pluralizing suffix -anos, similar to gárbanos (curls), plãskanos (frizz), strãzdanos (freckles), with further origin of the first component unknown.[1] Compare also Proto-Finnic *sammal (moss), which may be borrowed from Baltic.
