[edit]Seemingly formed as sam- + a pluralizing suffix -anos, similar to gárbanos (“curls”), plãskanos (“frizz”), strãzdanos (“freckles”), with further origin of the first component unknown.[1] Compare also Proto-Finnic *sammal (“moss”), which may be borrowed from Baltic.
