From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Turkish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Ottoman Turkish صیقشمق (sıkışmak), equivalent to sık- +‎ -ış +‎ -mak.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /sɯ.kɯʃˈmak/
  • Hyphenation: sı‧kış‧mak

Verb

[edit]

sıkışmak (third-person singular simple present sıkışır) (intransitive)

  1. to be/get in a tight spot; to be backed into a corner
  2. to become jammed
  3. (figuratively) to run out of arguments; to be unable to answer an argument

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Sıkışmak should not be confused with sikişmek ("to fuck"). Fatal arguments have broken out over text messages in which sikişmek was understood while sıkışmak was intended.[1]
