Romanian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Vulgar Latin *seus or *sous, from Latin suus, from Proto-Italic *sowos, from Proto-Indo-European *sewos, from *swé (“self”).
Pronunciation
[edit]Determiner
[edit]său m or n (feminine singular sa, masculine plural săi, feminine and neuter plural sale)
Usage notes
[edit]Though infrequently used, său is preferred to ei or lui when the possessed object belongs to the subject of the sentence. For example:
- Eu vorbesc cu prietenul lui. ― I am talking with his friend.
- El vorbește cu prietenul său. ― He is talking with his (own) friend.
