[edit]From Middle High German sēr, from Old High German sēr (“sore, painful”), from Proto-Germanic *sairaz. Cognate with German sehr (“very”), Dutch zeer (“very; painful”), English sore. The semantic development is “sore, painful” → “violent, powerful” → “fast, quick”.
