säckstation
Appearance
Swedish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Compound of säck (“sack; bag”) + station (“station”). First attested in 1899[1]. Cognate with German Sackbahnhof and Norwegian sekkestasjon.
Noun
[edit]säckstation c
- A terminus, a terminal; a type of train station without any thoroughfare, where the railroad tracks stop (although not necessarily the final stop of the line).
Usage notes
[edit]- Only used in a concrete sense about the station structure itself. The end of a line is called slutstation or ändstation.
- Depending on strictness; a station with thoroughfare can still be considered a säckstation if the continuing tracks only let the train turn around, or are under construction or maintenance, or if only freight trains pass through.
