Borrowed from Latin satrapēs (governor), from Ancient Greek σατράπης (satrápēs), from Old Median *xšaθrapāwan- (literally kingdom-protector), which is cognate with Old Persian 𐎧𐏁𐏂𐎱𐎠𐎺𐎠 (xšaçapāvā); see there for more.
