[edit]From Middle High German ruobe, from Old High German ruoba, from Proto-Germanic *rōbǭ, *rōbjǭ. Cognate with German Rübe (“beet, turnip”) (from Middle High German variant rüebe); see there for more. Distant doublet of ribes (“currant”).
