Uncertain. Either:

  1. a prefixed formation of rrë- +‎ *fanë, with the latter unattested; from Proto-Albanian *span(d)ā, cognate to Old Norse fanta, fattr (curved), Latin pandus (bend, crooked, curved),(Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
  2. according to Orel, derived from rrëfej in its unattested meaning '*to carry (away)', continuing the same meaning as Latin referre.[1]
