Etymology

Via metathesis from Late Latin liquiritia, from glycyrrhiza, a borrowing of Ancient Greek γλυκύρριζα (glukúrrhiza). Compare Catalan regalèssia, Spanish regaliz, French réglisse and Old Italian regolizia.
