[edit]Inherited from Old French regulisse, ricolisse, metathesized form of licoresse (whence English licorice, liquorice), from Late Latin liquiritia, alteration of Ancient Greek γλυκύρριζα (glukúrrhiza): γλυκύς (glukús, “sweet”) + ῥίζα (rhíza, “root”).
