Derived from the verb rast (“to find”) +‎ -ma, following the same pattern as jaust (“to sense, to guess”), jausma (“feeling, guess”). It continues older meanings of this verb, related to “growth,” “growing” (cf. older and dialectal meanings of rasma such as “flourishing,” “yield,” “excellence”). Cognates include Lithuanian rasmė̃ (“quick growth, rich income, (harvest) yield”).^[1]
