Etymology

[edit]

From Old Swedish rættesnøre, equivalent to rätta (align, straighten) +‎ -e- +‎ snöre. Compare Danish rettesnor, Middle Low German richtsnōr, German Richtschnur.

Now only used metaphorically, originally in the literal sense of strings used for alignment in bricklaying.
