From Proto-Albanian *kla(u)tja, from Proto-Indo-European *kleh₂u- (nail, pin, hook - instruments, of old use for locking doors). Cognate to Ancient Greek κλεῖς (kleîs), Latin clāvis, Lithuanian kliaudýti (to stop, to prevent).[1]
