Etymology

Deverbal of przed- (in front of, before) +‎ miotać (to fling, to hurl), modelled on podmiot or przymiot.[1] Calque of Latin obiectum.[2][3] First attested in the end of the 18th century.[4]

According to Słownik frekwencyjny polszczyzny współczesnej (1990), przedmiot is one of the most used words in Polish, appearing 64 times in scientific texts, 14 times in news, 38 times in essays, 14 times in fiction, and 5 times in plays, each out of a corpus of 100,000 words, totaling 135 times, making it the 446th most common word in a corpus of 500,000 words.[5]
